Las Palmas de Gran Canaria honors 16 personalities and institutions on its anniversary

The city celebrates its 548th anniversary by recognizing the work of prominent figures in culture, sports, and healthcare.

On the 548th anniversary of its founding, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will award the Gold Medal and titles of Favorite Sons and Daughters and Adopted Sons and Daughters to 16 personalities and institutions.

To commemorate its 548th anniversary, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will honor 16 personalities and institutions recognized for their connection and work with the city. The Honors and Distinctions award ceremony will take place on June 23rd at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium.
In an extraordinary plenary session, the City Council has decided to grant eight Gold Medals. Among the recipients are the San José Hospital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Bientratar Association, the Coral Cantata of the Real Club Victoria, the Federation of Folklore Groups of Gran Canaria (FAFGC), Clipper, Canary Shipyards (Astican), and the Artemi Neighborhood Association. Singer Pedro Luis Domínguez Quevedo, artistically known as Quevedo, will also receive the city's Gold Medal.
As Favorite Sons and Daughters, the composer and director of Barrios Orquestados, José Brito López; footballer Jonathan Viera Ramos; and dancer and choreographer Dácil González Ruiz will be honored. Posthumously, the distinction will be awarded to the multidisciplinary artist Roberta Marrero Gutiérrez.
Furthermore, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will name four Adopted Sons and Daughters. These recognitions will go to physicist, engineer, and scientific communicator Javier Santaolalla Camino; the head of the Pneumology Service at the Gran Canaria Doctor Negrín University Hospital and professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), José Antonio Caminero Luna; the vice-president of UNICEF Canary Islands Committee, Nereida Castro Martín; and the Physical Education professor at the ULPGC, Cecilia Dorado García.
