The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council has launched a project to enhance pedestrian accessibility in the Guanarteme neighborhood, investing nearly 600,000 euros to remove architectural barriers across more than 30 streets.

This initiative, covering the area between José Sánchez Peñate and Olof Palme avenues, aims to facilitate walking access to key locations such as health centers and educational institutions. Beneficiaries include the health centers of Guanarteme and Alcaravaneras, the schools Fernando Guanarteme and Mesa y López, and the high schools El Rincón and Mesa y López.
The interventions will focus on over 30 strategic streets and points. On Fernando Guanarteme street, crosswalks will be adapted, new pedestrian crossings will be created near Almansa and El Salvador, and bus stops will be improved. On José Mesa y López, the works include ramps and crossings, as well as connections in areas like Daoiz, Costa Rica, and Plaza de España, and at intersections with Viriato, Pelayo, El Cid, and Gravina.
Improvements are also planned for José Sánchez Peñate, particularly at crossings and around the Las Arenas Shopping Center, and on Olof Palme, connecting with Mesa y López and Jesús Ferrer Jimeno. Other streets included in the project are Numancia, Pavía, Secretario Padilla, Castillejos, Simancas, Vergara, Cayetana Manrique, Pizarro, Concepción Arenal, Habana, and Mario César.
The works involve the installation of tactile paving with chromatic contrast, using yellow to guide from building facades to crossing points and blue at public transport stops. Areas with uneven surfaces will be marked with high-visibility steps. Additionally, acoustic traffic lights will be installed, urban furniture will be reorganized, and more parking spaces for people with reduced mobility will be created, with one for every 40 existing spaces. Passageways will also be cleared of elements like litter bins and poles.
Interested companies have until 2:00 PM on May 25 to submit their bids for this tender.
