The subsidy, totaling 6.39 million euros, was granted in 2022 by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda to support municipalities in implementing low-emission zones and promoting digital and sustainable urban transport, as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience plan.
A resolution signed by Mobility Councilor, José Eduardo Ramírez, formalized the return of the funds, as the State did not approve a further extension for the project's execution. In addition to the principal amount, 305,200.86 euros were incurred as late payment interest.
The Centro intermodal car park, located between Juan de Quesada and Real de San Roque streets, was designed in 2021 to offer 236 parking spaces. Its intended operation was similar to that of the Rincón car park, featuring low prices and integration with public transport (Guaguas and public bicycle services) to reduce traffic entering the city from the Tafira road.
The project faced several setbacks, including the withdrawal of the sole bid for its design and execution, and delays in the expropriation of necessary land, which was not resolved until December 2025. Despite the loss of state funds, the City Council has committed to financing the work with its own resources, with the expectation that the facility will be operational by the end of 2026.
