Renowned journalist Lourdes Santana will be the one to officially start the Foundational Festivities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The announcement was made by Mayor Carolina Darias, who highlighted Santana's role in commemorating the city's 548 years of history.
The opening speech is scheduled for Friday, June 12th, at 8:30 PM in the iconic Plaza de Santa Ana. Santana, who heads Cadena SER in the Canary Islands, expressed her surprise at the appointment, describing it as occurring during "a personal moment that is not the most cheerful," but one that inspired her to write a "very personal" narrative about her connection to the city.
The speaker indicated that her address will focus on the "memory and identity" of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the city she has chosen to live in. She will recount the neighborhoods that have shaped her life, such as Miller Bajo and Triana, as well as her family roots in La Isleta and Guanarteme, with Las Canteras beach serving as a backdrop.
Santana also reflected on her professional career, which has required her to spend time away from the island, including in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but she reaffirmed her commitment and pride in residing in Las Palmas. "I say that careers are made by taking chances, but above all by what we say no to," she stated, emphasizing her belonging to a city she considers a "flag and refuge" for those fighting for their rights.
The journalist mentioned the influence of writers such as Alexis Ravelo, Negrín, and Galdós on her perception of the city, clarifying that her speech will center on her own experiences and gratitude towards Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. She particularly thanked Mayor Carolina Darias, whom she met in the neighborhood and whose "public service" and "convictions" she praised.
For her part, Carolina Darias expressed her honor in serving as mayor and the freedom it grants her to select prominent figures. "I wanted them to be leading women of the city because, for a long time, women have not occupied the space we deserved," she said, highlighting the talent of women in the city.
