The Maritime Captaincy of Las Palmas has decreed a temporary restriction on maritime navigation in the waters near the Arguineguín pier, in the Gran Canarian municipality of Mogán, due to the official visit of Pope Leo XIV to the island.

The measure, outlined in a resolution signed on June 3rd and published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas, responds to a request from the Las Palmas Command of the Civil Guard's Provincial Maritime Service. The objective is to enhance security conditions during the planned papal visit events.
The resolution establishes a maritime navigation exclusion zone within a quarter-nautical mile radius around the Arguineguín pier. The prohibition will be in effect on Thursday, June 11, 2026, between 06:00 and 15:00 hours.
During this period, no vessel will be permitted to navigate within the delimited area, except for those expressly authorized by the competent authorities. The restriction will be broadcast via the nautical radio warning system and will remain active until the end of the established hours or until authorities request its early lifting.
The Maritime Captaincy bases this decision on various legal provisions that empower the maritime administration to limit or prohibit navigation for safety reasons. These include the Maritime Navigation Law, the Consolidated Text of the Law on State Ports and Merchant Shipping, and the Royal Decree regulating Maritime Captaincies and Maritime Districts.
These regulations allow for the establishment of temporary restrictions in Spanish maritime spaces when there are reasons related to navigation safety, the protection of people, or risk prevention.
