Work on the new Insular Sports Center (CID) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is progressing rapidly, having already exceeded 60% completion after ten months. The project, with an investment of 18.3 million euros, aims to transform the venue into a modern, accessible, and sustainable space.
The wooden roof of the main court is now finished, while the structure of the rear building has reached 90% completion. The perimeter substructure, over 75% complete, will support new bamboo slats that will unify the building's exterior image, connecting its different historical phases.
The new architectural envelope, featuring bamboo cladding, is underway, and the facade along Avenida Marítima is nearly finished. Work is currently focused on the area around the Fayna building, with this new outer skin expected to be completed before the end of summer.
Minor modifications have been made to ensure the rest of nearby residents, particularly in the Fayna building, are not disturbed. The full completion of the works is scheduled for the end of March 2027, although the central court could be finished by the end of this year.
The area around the swimming pool also shows significant progress, with the main structure completed. Waterproofing and ductwork will be carried out next. This section could be finalized between September and October, and the project includes a zero-level pool and renovated changing rooms and stands to enhance accessibility.
Installation of the new pavilion roof will commence at the end of this month, allowing for progress on interior work. The civil works phase for the pavilion could conclude by year-end. Some of the future CID's unique elements, such as the running track along the balcony towards Avenida Marítima, are also beginning to appear.
The future Insular Sports Center will maintain its multipurpose character, with a capacity for over 3,500 people, and will be adapted to current safety, accessibility, and comfort standards. The facility is expected to become a new sports and cultural landmark for the island.
