San Juan square in Telde will transform this Saturday, September 12th, into the epicenter of Puerto Rican music and tradition with the celebration of 'Puerto Rico Canta'. This initiative, promoted by the Culture Department of the Telde City Council, will commence at 8:30 PM, immediately following the traditional Bajada del Santo Cristo de Telde.
This event is part of the city's most significant festivities, coinciding with the Bajada del Santo Cristo, a manifestation of great religious and cultural value for both Telde and Gran Canaria. After this solemn act, San Juan square will host a musical proposal designed to strengthen the ties between the Canary Islands and Puerto Rico, exploring their roots, rhythms, and especially the rich tradition of the 'décima'.
Under the title 'Puerto Rico Canta', the entity Decimanía de Puerto Rico, dedicated to promoting traditional Puerto Rican music and the cultivation of the 'décima', will present a show in the Canary Islands that will allow the public to delve into the musical heritage of the Caribbean nation.
The ensemble will feature the participation of the Nieves Maldonado family, renowned for their skill in typical Boricua music. The group will include the celebrated cuatrista Christian Nieves, Modesto Nieves on guitar, Mónica Nieves on vocals and güiro, and percussionist Raúl Maldonado. They will be joined by trovadores Omar Santiago and Shamira Santiago, father and daughter, along with Roberto Silva, forming a collective that promises an evening of improvisation, tradition, and the most characteristic sounds of Puerto Rico.
The night will be dominated by boleros, guarachas, décimas, and other genres from the typical Boricua repertoire, conceived for the enjoyment of popular Puerto Rican music in an emblematic setting like San Juan square.
The Councilor for Culture, Juan Martel, has highlighted the importance of enriching Telde's cultural programming with international proposals, especially on dates of great significance for the city. According to Martel, 'Puerto Rico Canta' will complement a day of deep religious and cultural tradition with a musical offering that will bring the richness of Puerto Rican culture closer to the citizens.
The Culture Department extends an invitation to all citizens to participate in this Caribbean night and enjoy a proposal that celebrates tradition, identity, music, and culture in the historic heart of Telde.
