This initiative, promoted by the Department of Equality, aims to provide immediate attention, information, and support to women who may experience situations of gender-based violence, harassment, or sexual assault during celebrations.
The Violet Points will serve as reference points for prevention and awareness, as well as a direct support resource for potential victims of sexual violence or sexist behavior in leisure contexts with large crowds. Specialized staff in equality and prevention of sexual violence will provide information, guidance, and immediate support, and can activate protocols and refer victims to emergency services or relevant security forces if necessary.
The service will be deployed at least at six key events on the local festive calendar for the remainder of the year. The first intervention will take place on June 23rd for the Saint John's Eve celebration, followed by the LGTBI+ Pride event on June 26th. The program continues on August 4th during the Romería de Las Nieves in Lomo Magullo; on August 31st for the fireworks in Melenara; on October 24th for La Noche Más Corta; and on November 25th for events organized on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The Councilor for Equality, María Eugenia Melián, explained that the goal is to offer a "point of information and attention against gender-based violence as proposed by the State Pact," providing a "stable and safe place" during celebrations. For his part, the Councilor for Festivities, Miguel Rodríguez, valued the measure as a step towards safer and more inclusive celebrations, strengthening municipal coordination against gender violence.
With this new resource, the City Council of Telde joins a growing trend in many municipalities that are implementing specific attention and prevention spaces at events with high public concentration to foster festive environments free from gender-based violence.
