The live broadcast of the Bajada of the Santísimo Cristo de Telde can be followed this Saturday on Televisión Canaria and its digital channels. This event, one of the most anticipated by devotees in Gran Canaria, is part of the celebration of the 675th anniversary of the founding of Telde this year, an occasion that has marked the municipality's cultural, social, and institutional programming.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Telde City Council will install a giant screen and chairs outside the Minor Basilica of San Juan. This initiative aims to allow residents, visitors, and devotees to follow the event's development in San Juan square, even when the basilica's interior capacity is insufficient.
The mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, highlighted the special nature of this celebration, describing it as "a cultural, historical, and social manifestation that unites generations, reinforces the city's identity, and moves those who experience it up close or from afar."
The day will begin at 7:00 PM with the celebration of mass. Around 8:00 PM, the Bajada of the Santísimo Cristo will commence, led by the usual six bearers. The image will be descended from the Gothic-Flemish altarpiece of the main altar of the Minor Basilica of San Juan and carefully placed on its mobile throne, as tradition dictates.
The image, weighing approximately six and a half kilograms and standing one meter eighty centimeters tall, will remain in this location for the next 10 days, during which time residents and visitors can approach to pay their respects. The celebration of this act, within the framework of Telde's 675th anniversary, underscores its deep roots in the city's history and identity.
