ULPGC to Investigate Lunar Influence on Plankton and Ocean Carbon

The IMPULSO project, funded with over 357,000 euros, will analyze how the lunar cycle affects subtropical marine life and CO2 transport.

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) will study the influence of the lunar cycle on subtropical ocean plankton and its impact on marine carbon transport.

The IMPULSO project, an initiative by the ULPGC, will focus on analyzing how lunar phases affect plankton communities in subtropical marine ecosystems. This research aims to better understand the rapid variations experienced by open-sea plankton and their connection to lunar cycles, an aspect previously little studied.
The research, which has secured funding of 357,035.46 euros, seeks to shed light on how these plankton changes may influence community functioning and the processes of carbon transport from the ocean's surface layers to deeper waters.

The IMPULSO project
The study does not assume the Moon is the sole determining factor but will scientifically measure and analyze the relationship between the lunar cycle and observed changes in subtropical plankton. This initiative is part of the 17 applied R&D projects supported by the Government of the Canary Islands and FEDER funds.
IMPULSO aligns with the Canary Islands' Blue Economy, aiming to generate scientific knowledge and develop technological capabilities related to marine activities. The funding, including FEDER Canarias 2021-2027 funds, underscores the strategic importance of ocean research for the development of the Islands.
