The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL) begin their annual blood donation campaign, which will run until November 11.

Mobile units and donation teams from Hemodonación y Hemoterapia of the Canary Health Service (SCS) will tour the various university campuses in the Canary Islands between October 13 and November 11. The campaign, under the slogan ‘Start the course, giving life’, aims to promote donation among the university community and contribute to ensuring blood supply in the archipelago's hospitals.
During the presentation of the initiative, the importance of blood donation for society was highlighted, and how the participation of university students is key to the generational renewal of donors on the islands. Universities are considered a fundamental recruitment hub for the successful development of blood donation in the autonomous community.
As a novelty, the campaign incorporates a 3D mixed reality experience, allowing participants to experience donation in an immersive and entertaining way. Attendees will be able to enjoy experiences such as ‘Zen Garden’ and ‘Intergalactica’ using virtual reality headsets. This experience will take place at the ULPGC from October 20 to 23 and at the ULL from October 26 to 29.
The blood donation campaign in the public universities of the Canary Islands achieved a total of 1,677 donations in the 2025/2026 academic year, representing an increase of 3.65% compared to the previous year. This figure is expected to be surpassed in the current campaign.
Various donation points and schedules are detailed for the campuses of the ULPGC, including Tafira Campus, Obelisco Campus, Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Architecture, Faculty of Marine Sciences, School of Computer Engineering, School of Industrial and Civil Engineering, Science and Technology Park, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences. Points at the ULL are also specified, covering the Central Campus, Santa Cruz Campus (Higher Polytechnic School of Engineering), Anchieta Campus (Faculty of Sciences), Guajara Campus, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Education, and the Health Sciences Campus (School of Nursing and Faculty of Medicine).
Furthermore, from October 13 to November 11, students can visit the Blood Bank of the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital from Monday to Friday. For more information, it is recommended to consult the official channels of the SCS and the participating universities.
The basic requirements to donate blood include being between eighteen and 65 years old (up to sixty for a first-time donation), weighing more than fifty kilograms, being in generally good health, and not being pregnant.
