The joint intervention by both administrations completely renews a strategic space around the Plaza de la Constitución and the Avenida Marítima. The goal is to reestablish this point as a connection between the city and the port, giving it a more accessible and modern image.
The mayor of Santa Cruz de La Palma, Asier Antona, highlighted that the project represents "an important step to continue improving the city's image, especially one of its most visible and frequented spaces." He emphasized the City Council's commitment to "continue recovering and valuing strategic spaces" and called it "a magnificent example of what we can achieve when different administrations work in coordination."
For his part, the president of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Pedro Suárez, stressed the entity's commitment "to improving the port's integration with the city and enhancing the port environment." He noted that the result is "a more cared-for and renewed space, with new paving, lighting, and garden areas," particularly relevant due to visitor influx, "especially with the arrival of cruise ships."
The intervention covers an area of 867.79 square meters and includes areas for rest and pedestrian transit, a pergola, new seating, vegetation, and the reorganization of access points with a new roundabout. The aim was to transform the area into a space for leisure and meeting, considering the flow of visitors to the capital of La Palma.
The project incorporates new paving, accessibility improvements, and urban furniture, along with a comprehensive lighting renovation using more energy-efficient LED technology. Bollards, lighting under seats and the pergola, and indirect lighting on existing palm trees have been installed, respecting Canary Islands' night sky protection criteria.
The new traffic management system includes a single-lane roundabout to coordinate entry and exit movements, improving traffic organization and safety. The execution budget amounted to 227,857.07 euros.
The mayor thanked the Port Authority for its "commitment and willingness" to make possible a project that "benefits the entire city, those of us who live here, and also those who visit us."
This inauguration marks the completion of a first phase. The City Council remains committed to continuing the integral transformation of the area, advancing towards a second phase in collaboration with the Port Authority to improve the relationship between Santa Cruz de La Palma and its port.
