The ‘Memoria Viva’ plan, promoted by the Employment Promotion Department of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, continues its conservation and improvement efforts at significant heritage sites on the island. Currently, the Vega de Río Palmas is a primary focus, being prepared to host the Festivities in Honor of Our Lady of La Peña, scheduled from September 17th to 20th.
Works at the Vega de Río Palmas and its surroundings began on August 20th. Concurrently, on September 1st, activities commenced at the church, including exterior scraping and painting, as well as site improvements around the plaza. These tasks involve painting exterior walls and varnishing the picnic area and cobblestone street doors. Soon, painting will also be carried out on a property owned by the Cabildo.
The Minister of Employment Promotion, Nuria Cabrera; the Minister of Cultural Heritage, Rayco León; and the mayor of Tuineje, David Herrera, visited the ongoing projects to gain firsthand knowledge of the work being done by the ‘Memoria Viva’ plan personnel.
The employment plan has also initiated conservation and rehabilitation works this week at the Tuineje church. Since September 7th, a crew has been scraping and painting the entire exterior of the temple.
These interventions complement other works carried out at various locations across the island. In the north, actions have been taken at the Casa Alta de Tindaya and the church of Tetir, where the works are nearly complete. In Antigua, cleaning, scraping, and exterior painting of the church have been performed. In the south, work continues at the Interpretation Center of the Jandía Natural Park, located at the Punta de Jandía Lighthouse, focusing on access improvements, restoration of wooden elements, and various masonry and painting tasks.
The project ‘Memoria Viva. Insular Plan for Employment and Heritage Conservation’ aims to condition and rehabilitate public heritage spaces in Fuerteventura, such as museums, cultural centers, and historic buildings. Its objective is to contribute to the preservation of the island's memory and identity, promote local employment, and enhance cultural heritage.
The project is co-financed by the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Government of the Canary Islands, through resources from the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN), with a total investment of 472,007.63 euros.
