The development of 37 protected homes in María Jiménez, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is progressing rapidly, a result of the collaboration between the City Council, the Cabildo de Tenerife, and the Government of the Canary Islands, aiming to expand the public housing stock in the capital of Tenerife.

Representatives from the Canary Islands administrations visited the construction site of 37 protected homes on La Portada street, in the María Jiménez neighborhood, within the Anaga district. This joint initiative seeks to strengthen the public housing supply in the municipality. During the inspection, the progress of this development, considered key to increasing the number of public residences in the area, was confirmed.

"From Santa Cruz, we are clearly and decisively committed to the construction of public housing. To this end, we actively collaborate with other administrations such as the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands, with whom we have signed an agreement that allows us not only to finance these 37 homes but also another 226 in Cuevas Blancas, in the Southwest district."

The homes in María Jiménez are expected to be ready for occupancy by families early next year. Additionally, construction of 226 more homes in Cuevas Blancas, in the Southwest district, is planned to begin this summer. It was highlighted that more than half of the housing currently under construction in Tenerife is concentrated in Santa Cruz, underscoring the municipal commitment to resolving housing issues.

"Today we are seeing how a project of 37 homes is progressing, which will soon become homes for 37 families. The inter-administrative collaboration between the Government of the Canary Islands, the city councils, and the Cabildo demonstrates that together we can respond to the main problem of Canarian families."

The Government of the Canary Islands is currently building over 2,000 homes across the archipelago and has another 4,000 planned, aiming for families to settle on the islands. Meanwhile, the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife emphasized the Santa Cruz City Council's agility in managing bureaucratic procedures, which has facilitated the progress of these works.
The Cabildo de Tenerife has allocated six million euros for this development and the future 226 homes in Cuevas Blancas. The investment for the 37 homes in María Jiménez amounts to 4,415,905.84 euros, with construction starting on October 21, 2024, and an expected completion date of February 19, 2027. The building will offer various residential typologies, including one, two, three, and four-bedroom homes, as well as two adapted for people with reduced mobility and one five-bedroom supervised dwelling.
This project is part of a joint strategy to promote public housing in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The City Council has provided the urbanized land for this development, valued at 525,859 euros, and the land for the future homes in Cuevas Blancas, valued at 7,578,489.83 euros. The Government of the Canary Islands, through the Canarian Housing Institute, has contributed 19 million euros, bringing the total funding to 25 million euros for public housing construction in the capital of Tenerife.
