The judicial governing body has agreed to support the petition from the Provincial Coordination Commission against Gender-Based Violence in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This move addresses the failure to comply with Law 4/2015 on the Victim Statute and the Istanbul Convention, which mandate the provision of these specialized services.
Although a legal framework has been in place since Decree 89/2019, which provided for the staffing of psychologists, lawyers, and social workers, the offices remain non-operational. The Governing Chamber emphasized that the lack of infrastructure in the capital of Tenerife cannot be used as a justification for delaying their implementation.
The matter will be brought to the next meeting of the Joint Commission with the Government of the Canary Islands. The goal is to ensure comprehensive, multidisciplinary care that allows for the assessment of victims' protection needs from their very first contact with the justice system.
