The Tenerife Symphony Orchestra has concluded a new edition of its community program 'Open Music', titled 'To the Rhythm of Play', bringing music and childhood memories to five centers across the island, with a total of 140 participants in workshops and 260 attendees at concerts.
The initiative, which included ten workshops and five concerts, took place in centers in La Laguna, Güímar, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz, and El Rosario. The program aimed to transform childhood experiences into musical proposals through movement, listening, and body awareness exercises.
Participants' creations, including songs, dances, and small scenic actions, were integrated into the concerts alongside performances by a string and percussion ensemble from the orchestra. Socio-educational coordinator Ana Hernández-Sanchiz and choreographer Antonio Quiles led the activities.
“
"The work done in previous years has been consolidating and strengthening the bond with the participants. They have conveyed their emotions to us and, at times, their astonishment at some of the moments experienced in the program, so far removed from their usual activity in the orchestra."
Hernández-Sanchiz highlighted the incorporation of new centers, such as the Hogar Santa Rita in Puerto de la Cruz, and emphasized the musicians' involvement and the impact these experiences have on them.
“
"The child we once were is still living with us. This year we have laughed a lot."
The activities were held between October 5 and 16 at the Hospital Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (La Laguna), the CAMP Reina Sofía (Güímar), the Centro de Mayores de Ofra (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), the Hogar Santa Rita (Puerto de la Cruz), and the Centro Penitenciario Tenerife II (El Rosario).
The Symphony ensemble consisted of Silvia Cánovas and Marta Beata Estefan (violins), Eva Moszczynska (viola), David Barrera (cello), and Emilio Díaz and Carlos Llácer (percussion). The repertoire included works by Haydn, Mozart, Reber, Godard, Thomas, Gluck, Raff, Leopold Mozart, and Hiller.
'Open Music' is part of the community and participatory programming of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra and is developed in collaboration with the Institute of Social and Sociosanitary Care (IASS) of the Cabildo de Tenerife and the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions.
