The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council has removed approximately 30,000 kilograms of seaweed from the La Puntilla area of Las Canteras beach, and an additional 5,000 kilograms from the San Cristóbal neighborhood, due to recent sea storms.

During April 13, 14, 16, and 18, workers from the Department of City of Sea carried out an intensive intervention in La Puntilla, on the capital's main beach. This action was necessary due to significant seaweed accumulations caused by the latest storm.
Municipal sources explained that seasonal changes often loosen seaweed, and storms then stir it up and drag it to the shore. They also highlighted that the recently concluded winter has been unusually active, with continuous sea storms since last November.

"Seasonal changes usually cause the seaweed to be looser, and when a storm occurs, it stirs it up and drags it to the shore."

This situation has also affected activities on the sand, such as the surf schools in the La Cícer area, which have seen their usual routines disrupted. The presence of seaweed was not limited to Las Canteras; in the fishing district of San Cristóbal, in the Cono Sur, nearly 5,000 kilograms were removed last Sunday, April 19.
Additionally, Las Canteras beach has flown the purple flag for several weeks due to the presence of jellyfish and continuous storms. These meteorological phenomena have also caused sand displacement in various parts of the beach, leading the Department of City of Sea to buoy off access from Gravina and Churruca streets for safety reasons due to unstable ground. Authorities remind the public that the sand will naturally return.
