Up to June 2026, a total of 12,858 workplace accidents were recorded in the Canary Islands, representing a 3.9% decrease compared to the same period last year. Serious or very serious accidents showed a significant reduction of 45.8%, falling from 107 in the first half of 2025 to 58 in 2026. These figures are part of the Statistics on Work Accidents published monthly by the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC).
The decline is observed across all accident severities. Minor accidents decreased by 3.5%. Regarding fatal accidents, 8 were registered up to June 2026, compared to 18 in the same period of 2025.
By province, the number of work accidents decreased in Las Palmas by 3.8% and in Santa Cruz de Tenerife by 4.0%, relative to the data accumulated by June 2025.
The Incidence Index, which measures workplace accidents per 100,000 affiliated workers, stood at 197.9 in the first six months of 2026, slightly higher than the 197.1 recorded in May. This index considers workers who contribute and have professional contingencies recognized.
The construction sector shows the highest incidence, with 422.7 accidents per 100,000 workers, followed by agriculture with 342.1. In construction, 1,539 accidents with sick leave were recorded by June 2026, and in agriculture, 404. The industry sector has an index of 310.3 (802 accidents). The services sector, despite having the lowest index (171.6 accidents per 100,000 workers), accounts for the largest number of incidents with 8,418.
