The Canary Islands Government, through the General Directorate of Environmental Quality, has launched the Canary Islands Ecodesign and Circular Economy Hackathon 2026. This initiative aims to gather students, professionals, and entrepreneurs to generate concrete proposals addressing circular economy challenges in the islands.
The event will feature two in-person sessions: on September 26th in Tenerife and on October 3rd in Gran Canaria, both running from 09:00 to 20:00. Participation is free and open to individuals or teams.

The Director General of Environmental Quality, Ángel Montañés, highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation for the transition to a more circular model. He noted that the event will facilitate connections between diverse profiles to address real territorial issues.
The Hackathon is part of the Circular Economy Action Plan (PAEC) 2024-2026 and the Canary Islands Circular Economy Strategy 2021-2030. Proposed challenges include reducing single-use plastics in events and hospitality, transforming agricultural waste into new products or business models, promoting product repair and reuse, and applying ecodesign in the tourism sector.
During the sessions, participants will work in multidisciplinary teams, receive mentorship from professionals, and present their solutions to a jury. Proposals will be evaluated based on their innovation, environmental impact, viability, and potential application in the Canary Islands. The top three from each day will be awarded.
Participation is open to students, professionals, and entrepreneurs with creative, technical, scientific, business, and legal backgrounds. Registration is free, with limited spots, and can be completed via www.circularcanarias.com.
