The archipelago is the only region in the country that does not have these devices, even though the DGT continues to expand a national network that already exceeds one hundred units. These cameras can automatically detect infractions such as not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone while driving, or running a STOP sign.
The AEA study identifies Andalusia as the community with the highest number of cameras, with 70 devices, followed by Castilla y León (32) and the Valencian Community (27). Other regions such as Madrid (16), Asturias (8), La Rioja (6), Cantabria (3), and the Balearic Islands (2) also have these systems. The report explicitly confirms that the Canary Islands have no cameras of this type.
Unlike conventional speed cameras, these artificial vision cameras incorporate artificial intelligence to analyze images and automatically identify sanctionable behaviors before they are reviewed by agents, thus advancing traffic control automation.
The absence of these cameras makes the Canary Islands an exception. While other communities are progressively deploying these systems on conventional roads and motorways, the Canarian road network continues to rely on other control mechanisms. However, the archipelago does have an extensive network of fixed and mobile speed cameras distributed across islands like Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, and others.
A recent AEA report highlights that a speed camera on the GC-1, at kilometer point 42 in Gran Canaria, is among the most active devices in Spain, issuing nearly 16,000 fines last year.
Artificial vision cameras are designed to locate risk behaviors difficult to detect by other systems, not for speed control. Among the infractions they can identify are: driving without a properly fastened seatbelt, using a mobile phone while driving, failing to come to a complete stop at a STOP sign (video STOP), and crossing a continuous line where specific cameras are installed for such control.
The initial processing of images is done through artificial intelligence algorithms, but potential sanctions require subsequent validation by an agent, according to the association.
The report's data reflect a highly uneven implementation, with Andalusia concentrating almost half of the cameras. AEA considers this deployment to evidence the DGT's growing commitment to incorporating technologies capable of automating traffic surveillance and improving the detection of dangerous behaviors, a strategy that is expected to continue expanding in the coming years.
