The document Sistema Estatal de Indicadores de la Educación 2026, published by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, reveals a setback in regional indicators. The current figure of 15.9% represents an increase from the 13.1% recorded in 2024, moving away from the historical low of 12% achieved in 2021 and exceeding the national average of 12.8%.
Regarding early childhood education, the report highlights that only 46% of two-year-olds in the islands were enrolled during the 2023-24 academic year. This data places the Canary Islands as the second region with the worst records in this area, only behind Asturias, and far from the national average of 73.3%.
Regarding the population aged 25 to 34 with higher education, the archipelago presents 43.7%, placing it at the bottom of the country, only ahead of Baleares and Melilla. By gender, women reach 45.9% compared to 41.6% for men.
Finally, regarding the suitability rate at age 15, which measures students enrolled in the theoretical course corresponding to their age, the Canary Islands record 73.3%. This figure is slightly lower than the national average, which stands at 75.7%.
