This year marks the second inclusion of the island event in the WRC calendar, a milestone coinciding with a historic record of participation by Canarian teams. This circumstance highlights the remarkable evolution of motorsport in the Canary Islands over recent years.
Local fans have proven to be up to the task of an event of this magnitude, and at a sporting level, the region has managed to develop a pool of talents capable of competing at various levels of the world championship.
In the silver category, the most crowded, a large part of the local potential is concentrated. A prominent team, with nine regional titles to their name, is making their debut in the WRC, which represents an additional challenge and motivation. This team already achieved a fourth place in 2022 during the event's stint in the European Rally Championship (ERC), reinforcing their international competitiveness and deep knowledge of the local stages.
Another team with extensive experience and knowledge of the event, who was a protagonist in the last decade with victories and podiums, returns to competition after their last participation in 2019. Their comeback adds a point of interest to the Canarian representation.
Other teams, some making their category debut, face this challenge with great enthusiasm. One team, whose debut was planned for another event that was suspended, arrives without prior experience in the Rally2 category. Similarly, another team, with a long career in lower categories, is also facing their first participation in this section. For both, emotional management will be as crucial as their progress through the stages.
Canarian representation extends to other divisions. In the Rally3 category, a 24-year-old driver from Lanzarote, established as one of the most promising figures on the island with international experience, will compete alongside his regular co-driver. This team arrives after securing a third and fourth place in the Rally Sweden and Croatia, respectively, within the WRC3 classification. Another team repeats their experience after their seventh-place finish in the Rally Islas Canarias' WRC debut last year.
The Rally4 category gathers the largest volume of island teams, with several participants reflecting the category's strong roots as a talent incubator. Finally, the island's representation is completed by a Dakar driver and another team from Tenerife, thus covering virtually all competitive levels of the championship.
