The Army in Canarias 2026 has launched a significant deployment of the 'Canarias' XVI Brigade (BRICAN XVI), coordinated by the Canary Islands Command. This initiative involves both foot and tactical vehicle patrols across all islands of the archipelago, covering strategic points and areas of national sovereignty.
This mission is part of the National Security framework in peacetime, with the primary objective of strengthening surveillance, exercising a deterrent effect, and ensuring the stability of the terrestrial territory. The operation has been designed to cover every corner of the archipelago through an efficient distribution of regiments.
The deployment is organized as follows: the Tenerife 49 Infantry Regiment (RI 49) will be responsible for surveillance in Tenerife; personnel from the Canarias 50 Infantry Regiment will carry out operational tasks in Gran Canaria; the Soria 9 Infantry Regiment (RI 9) will be deployed in Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and La Graciosa; the XVI Engineer Battalion will undertake surveillance duties in La Palma; and the 93 Field Artillery Regiment will move to La Gomera and El Hierro.
In addition to patrols, BRICAN XVI has scheduled outreach activities for the civilian population, especially targeting young people. For example, in Fuerteventura, the RI 9 will offer an informative talk at IES Jandía next Tuesday and a static exhibition of military equipment on May 11 at IES Corralejo. In Tenerife, the RI 49 will visit the San Agustín educational center on Wednesday to explain the work of the Canary Islands Tactical Group.
These actions aim to demystify military work and showcase the technical and human capabilities of the units. Lieutenant General Julio Salom Herrera, head of the Canary Islands Army Command and Commander of the Terrestrial Operational Command (CMOT), is ultimately responsible for planning these operations, which also coordinate surveillance in Ceuta, Melilla, and the Balearic Islands.
