The mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña, is bidding farewell to the council and citizens ahead of a no-confidence vote scheduled for this Friday at 12:00 PM.

This Friday's plenary session, convened for 12:00 PM, will debate the no-confidence motion aimed at ousting the current mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña, after seven years in office. The initiative has been signed by Coalición Canaria (CC), the Partido Popular (PP), Asambleas Municipales de Fuerteventura (AMF), and Contigo, who propose Juan Cabrera Peña (AMF) as the new mayor.
During his farewell, Peña thanked citizens and municipal staff for their support. However, he directed remarks towards the motion's proponents, stating that "changes sometimes come through betrayal, without being wanted or avoidable." He expressed his hope that municipal management would not be blocked and that initiated projects would be completed.
This political maneuver concludes two consecutive terms for Matías Peña as head of Antigua's City Council, having previously led under the banner of Alternativa por Antigua (AlxAnt).
The outgoing mayor summarized his political career, recalling his early days as a "keeper at the Pozo Negro experimental farm" and expressing the "great pride and even greater responsibility" he felt serving as Antigua's mayor.
