The Cabildo de Gran Canaria, through its Department of Public Works, has completed the project to widen the Miraflor Bridge on the GC-21, in collaboration with the Teror City Council, aiming to resolve congestion and safety issues in the area.

The project, presented by Augusto Hidalgo, Councillor for Public Works, and José Agustín Arencibia, Mayor of Teror, addresses the issues of the section between kilometer points 7.4 and 8 of the GC-21, which runs through the Miraflor neighborhood. This 600-meter segment is notably narrow due to the age of the bridge, which no longer meets current accessibility and safety demands for the nearly 8,000 vehicles that use this road daily.
The intervention will focus on the structural rehabilitation of the Miraflor Bridge, a stone structure approximately five meters wide, insufficient for safe circulation. The plan is to widen the roadway along 55 meters to reach nine meters in width, four more than currently. This expansion will be carried out using an independent structure to preserve the original century-old bridge, which holds significant heritage value.

"With the project presented today, space is gained for both cars and pedestrians, ensuring the continuity of the pedestrian route already enabled in 2021 but which does not exist in this section of Miraflor."

Augusto Hidalgo · Vice President of the Cabildo
The new platform will feature six meters of roadway to allow simultaneous passage of two vehicles and a 1.50-meter shoulder for pedestrian traffic, protected by bollards. Additionally, fences with stone cladding will be installed to harmonize with the aesthetic of the historic bridge. To achieve this widening without affecting the original structure, two abutments with micropiles will be built at the ends of the road before crossing, on which the new concrete structure will rest, thus diverting traffic weight from the century-old construction.
The project also includes the urbanization of the road margins, adaptation of access points to adjacent properties and homes, implementation of traffic calming measures, improvement of pedestrian and public transport accessibility, and conditioning of the ravine's drainage. In the rest of the thoroughfare, seven new pedestrian crossings will be enabled, existing bus stops will be improved, and a parking area will be conditioned next to the junction with the road leading to El Hornillo, Lo Blanco, and San José del Álamo.

"This is a project we have been working on for years together with the Department of Public Works of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, to which I publicly thank for their involvement over these years to address, without a doubt, a historical demand also from the residents in order to recover safety in that very important section of Miraflor."

José Agustín Arencibia · Mayor of Teror
Currently, the Public Works Service is managing the expropriations of about 40 plots necessary for the expansion, with the goal of completing this process by the end of the year. Subsequently, the works, valued at 3,171,424 euros, will be put out to tender, with a possible start date in just over a year and a half and an execution period of 20 months. During the four or five months of work on the bridge, traffic on the Teror road will be cut, with diversions via the GC-211, the San José del Álamo road, which will also receive a 3.5 million euro investment for modernization and improvement, scheduled to start by the end of this year.
