Vega de San Mateo has inaugurated its renovated bus stop, a key infrastructure modernized with video surveillance systems, reorganized accesses, and significant improvements for over a thousand daily users.

The town of San Mateo now boasts a fully renovated main bus stop, following the completion of works that have transformed the infrastructure into a more modern, safe, and functional space. The project addressed the previous deterioration of the facility, updating essential elements such as the roof, pavement, and the reorganization of pedestrian accesses. Additionally, new lighting, video surveillance systems, real-time traveler information, and better adaptation to climatic conditions have been implemented, along with optimized waiting areas and workspaces for drivers.
This infrastructure is vital, serving eight interurban lines that connect San Mateo with various municipalities such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Brígida, Tejeda, Telde, Teror, and Valsequillo, in addition to the peripheral neighborhoods of the municipality itself. This reinforces its role as a central communication hub in Vega de San Mateo.
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria, through the Autoridad Única del Transporte, has allocated 831,400 euros to this comprehensive rehabilitation. The work, inaugurated this Wednesday, transforms the stop into a strategic point for public transport, ensuring safety and functionality for citizens.
The main actions, carried out by the awarded company Félix Santiago Melián S.L., included the reorganization of pedestrian accesses and exits to optimize circulation and safety. The pedestrian platform was also improved, along with protection against adverse weather conditions through the construction of a new, larger roof and the redesign of waiting areas.
The pavement of the roadway area was completely rehabilitated, involving an excavation of 1.5 meters deep, the creation of an esplanade with selected soil, and the execution of new asphalt layers, aiming to prevent the deterioration and potholes previously present.

"Today we are in luck, with the culmination of one of the most important investments that the Cabildo de Gran Canaria will make in Vega de San Mateo. This is an investment of more than 830,000 euros that the Autoridad Única del Transporte puts at the service of the citizens of San Mateo and the neighborhoods of this municipality, as well as the neighboring municipalities."

Teodoro Sosa · Councillor for Presidency and Sustainable Mobility of the Island Government

"Residents were demanding its opening due to the inconvenience of having to travel further to catch public transport. Today it is a reality and they can now use this stop, located in the center of the town."

Davinia Falcón · Mayor of San Mateo
Mayor Davinia Falcón also announced that the City Council will sign the replanting act this Thursday for the future taxi stand in the area, which will be located just behind the main bus stop. This initiative aims to create an integrated mobility zone in the urban center for all citizens and visitors to the municipality.
