A cayuco carrying 169 people, including 15 women and seven minors, arrived unassisted this Tuesday at the port of La Estaca, on the island of El Hierro, following a seven-day journey from Gambia.

The vessel, which departed from Sami (Barra), in Gambia, transported individuals of various sub-Saharan nationalities, including from Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea-Conakry, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. Upon arrival, the occupants received immediate attention from health and emergency teams deployed at the pier.
Fortunately, none of the newcomers required transfer to the Nuestra Señora de los Reyes Island Hospital for specialized medical care. This allowed for assistance to be provided directly at the port.
Following initial assistance, all occupants of the cayuco will be transferred to the Temporary Foreigner Care Center (CATE), located in San Andrés, within the municipality of Valverde. There, they will remain under police custody and receive support from the NGO “Corazón naranja – Ebrima Sonko” until their transfer to other resources outside the island is arranged.
