A court in Arrecife has opened judicial proceedings against seven municipal workers for the alleged irregular annulment of traffic fines in the city since 2016.

This legal action stems from a complaint filed by the Prosecutor's Office, following a confidential internal investigation ordered by the Arrecife mayor's office on October 18, 2025. The purpose of this investigation was to clarify the annulments of traffic penalties carried out by municipal personnel during the aforementioned period.

"The opening of confidential information was ordered to investigate each and every one of the fines allegedly withdrawn or annulled in the CGI system by municipal officials, to clarify the complete list of affected files and the user/users who executed each action in CGI, date and time, invoked reason, and documentary support."

To conduct this investigation, the mayor's office, which also holds direct responsibility for the Local Police, implemented precautionary measures. These measures temporarily blocked the ability of any unauthorized user to annul or cancel in the computer system, while ensuring the ordinary processing of files continued.
Subsequently, the mayor's office requested the Legal Advisory Service to forward the findings of the internal investigation to the Prosecutor's Office. The aim is to determine responsibilities for these annulments, estimated at nearly 2,300 fines, with an approximate value of 600,000 euros, allegedly withdrawn between 2016 and 2025.
