The socialist party has expressed deep concern over the high expenditure of 1,533,511.43 euros for the celebration, considering that the results did not meet citizen expectations. This criticism is set against a backdrop of alleged disorganization and lack of planning by the capital's City Council.
“"Never has such a disastrous party been so expensive."
Cristina Duque, spokesperson for the PSOE in the Arrecife City Council, stated that the 2026 Carnival was the most costly in the city's history, without the investment being reflected in the event's quality. The councilor questioned the justification for this expense, given the disorganization and logistical problems that, according to the party, marked the celebration.
Groups and residents have criticized the improvisation and "disregard" for the carnival groups, who have historically been the driving force behind these festivities. Despite the significant investment, the quality of the events did not meet expectations, leading to widespread discontent among the citizens of Arrecife.
The PSOE has strongly criticized the management of Mayor Yonathan de León, whom they accuse of "burning money" without achieving positive results. Duque emphasized that, despite the high amount invested, the destination of that money is unclear, given the deficient organization and problems that arose during the festivities.
“"The residents of Arrecife deserve respect. Public money cannot continue to be spent without control, especially when we have much more urgent problems to address."
The Arrecife City Council has accumulated a total of 29 million euros allocated to festivals so far this legislative term. This amount has generated strong criticism, especially when the city faces urgent problems in areas such as public services, infrastructure, and social policies. The PSOE has urged the mayor to take responsibility and ensure more effective management of public resources, prioritizing the basic needs of citizens.
