The tragic event took place over the weekend on the island of Fuerteventura, which was under a yellow level alert due to high temperatures. According to information first reported by the local outlet ‘Noticias Fuerteventura’ and confirmed by sources from the Canary Islands Government's Health Department to EFE, the infant suffered a severe heatstroke.
Due to the severity of his condition, the baby was transferred by a medicalized helicopter from the General Hospital of Fuerteventura to the Maternity and Children's Hospital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Local media suggest the incident occurred due to an oversight by his parent, who allegedly left the child inside a vehicle.
Despite the efforts of the medical professionals who attended to the child at the hospital complex in the Gran Canarian capital, nothing could be done to reverse the effects of the heatstroke, and the baby ultimately passed away.
The entire autonomous community of the Canary Islands is currently under alerts for high temperatures. In Gran Canaria, the peaks and the southern, eastern, and western slopes have reached red level, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Fuerteventura, the scene of this unfortunate event, has been under a yellow alert since last Friday.
