The Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Guardia Civil Command in Las Palmas has taken action against several companies involved in 'motor tourism' for conducting motocross routes in unauthorized areas of Fuerteventura.
These activities took place in zones subject to temporary restrictions and closures established by the Island Council, due to their ecological value and to protect birds during their breeding season. Affected locations include areas designated as Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA) and Special Conservation Areas (ZEC).
Investigations began after the existence of these companies became known. It was confirmed that they were offering tourist packages including routes with motor vehicles through protected natural spaces, lacking the necessary documentation and authorizations for leisure and active tourism activities in the Canary Islands.
For these actions, administrative complaints have been filed for alleged infringements of Law 4/2017, on Land and Protected Natural Areas of the Canary Islands, which carry fines between 600 and 6,000 euros. Complaints were also filed for possible infringements of Law 7/1995, on Tourism Management of the Canary Islands, with fines ranging from 1,500 to 300,000 euros.
