The book, a collaboration between the Hammad family, journalist Mikel Ayestaran, and 5W magazine, will be presented in Fuerteventura with the presence of Gazan photojournalist Kayed Hammad, who is a refugee in Spain, and 5W magazine's photojournalist Anna Surinyach. The event will take place at 8:00 PM in the Josefina Plá Hall of the Insular Library Center.
Menu of Gaza narrates how the Hammad family sustained themselves without water, gas, or electricity, cooking under bombs and without access to fresh produce. This project, which documented their daily lives through journalist Mikel Ayestaran's Instagram account, garnered tens of thousands of followers and received the Ortega y Gasset Award for Journalism 2025.
The Hammad family, now evacuated to Spain to start a new life away from the bombs, shared their culinary experiences, many of them pillars of Palestinian gastronomy, through hundreds of images of the dishes they cooked for over 500 days, denouncing hunger as a weapon of war.
The book stems from the personal relationship between reporter Mikel Ayestaran and his interpreter in Gaza, Kayed Hammad, and his interest in denouncing the use of hunger as a weapon of war. The voice messages, photos, and memories sent to the world from Gaza are the heart of the book, narrating a daily life marked by war, but also by dignity, humor, and shared food.
The 'Voices from the Border' cycle, organized by the Insular Library Center and coordinated by journalist Eloy Vera, aims to highlight the struggle for human rights and the drama of migration at the borders.
