Air Traffic in Canary Islands: Slight March Dip, Annual Growth

Aena airports in the Canary Islands concluded March with 5.01 million passengers, marking a 0.9% decrease compared to the same month last year, although the first quarter's cumulative figures show a slight increase.

The airport operator Aena reported that, of the total passenger count in March, 4.9 million were on commercial flights. The breakdown indicates that 1.7 million travelers used domestic routes, experiencing a 3% year-on-year decline, while 3.27 million opted for international flights, showing a modest 0.4% increase.
Regarding operational activity, 43,647 aircraft movements were registered, a 2.6% decrease from March of the previous year. Cargo transport also saw a decline, reaching 2,651 tons, which represents a 4.1% reduction.
By individual airports, Gran Canaria led in passenger volume with 1.49 million, showing a 0.6% growth. It was followed by Tenerife South with 1.37 million travelers, despite a slight decrease of 0.4%. Other airports such as César Manrique-Lanzarote (794,349 passengers, -0.6%), Fuerteventura (624,124, -2.8%), Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna (569,492, -1.7%), La Palma (127,356, -9.2%), El Hierro (22,347, -5.2%), and La Gomera (8,753, -7.9%) also showed variations in their figures.
Despite the monthly decline, the first quarter balance is positive for Canary Islands airports, which accumulated 14.1 million passengers, a 0.1% increase over the same period last year. Of these, 4.8 million were on domestic flights (-1.8%) and 9.2 million on international flights (+1.4%). Aircraft movements in this quarter totaled 122,856 (-1%) and transported goods reached 7,918 tons (+0.2%).
