A Mercedes-Benz G-Class vehicle, specially reinforced to withstand terrorist attacks, will arrive at Gando air base on June 9th, intended for use by Pope Leo XIV during his visit to Gran Canaria.

The second of two popemobiles that Pope Leo XIV will use during his visit to Spain, a Mercedes-Benz G-Class model, has been reinforced to resist terrorist attacks. After arriving at the Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) base this Monday, it is scheduled for transfer to Gran Canaria, with arrival planned for next June 9th at Gando air base, according to information from the National Police.
An A400M aircraft from the Air and Space Army, belonging to Wing 31, was responsible for transporting this vehicle, along with other necessary material for the papal visit, from Rome to Madrid. The first popemobile, an Isuzu D-Max model, had already been previously transported to Barcelona.
The armored vehicle that has arrived in Madrid will be guarded by the Central Protection Unit of the General Commissariat of Citizen Security until the pontiff's arrival in the capital. Subsequently, both vehicles are located in secret places to ensure their security.
In addition to the two popemobiles, two other SUVs with license plates SCV 1 have arrived in Spain, with SCV standing for Stato della Città del Vaticano (Vatican City State).
Upon arrival at Gran Canaria airport on June 11th, the Pope will first proceed to the Arguineguín pier. Upon his return, he is expected to use the popemobile for a tour through the Vegueta area, passing by the Pérez Galdós Theater, with the aim of greeting the faithful and being close to them.
The organizing committee aims to maximize the use of the popemobile during the Pope's city transfers, as a "warm welcome" is anticipated from the citizens.
