The Government of the Canary Islands will allocate nearly 90 million euros to modernize the main hospitals in Gran Canaria, with projects for expansion, new infrastructure, and advanced technological equipment.

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands has announced a significant investment of approximately 90 million euros aimed at improving and expanding hospital infrastructure in Gran Canaria. The objective is to enhance healthcare capacity, update equipment, and adapt health services to the current demands of the population.
The Minister of Health, Esther Monzón, detailed the actions during her appearance before the Health Commission of the Parliament of the Canary Islands. Among the most notable projects is the construction of the new Pediatric Tower at the Materno Infantil hospital, with an investment of 41 million euros and scheduled for completion this year.
Furthermore, progress is being made on the project for a new building for the Insular hospital, which will be located on the former site of the University College of Las Palmas (CULP). This initiative, with an initial investment of 500,000 euros, aims to expand and reorganize the hospital complex's healthcare capacity. Other ongoing actions at the Insular include the rehabilitation of the south facade (over seven million euros), a new High-Resolution Unit, the future Comprehensive Care Unit for Vulnerable Victims, and projects related to low-dependency hospitalization and hospital custody. Energy sustainability will be addressed with the installation of three new heat pumps (823,000 euros).
In the mental health sector, over 370,000 euros have been allocated to the renovation of the Infanto-Juvenil hospital, the dual pathology unit, and new observation areas for child and adolescent emergencies, differentiated by age.
The Doctor Negrín University Hospital of Gran Canaria will be the site of significant actions between 2026 and 2027. The Emergency service will be expanded with 47 additional beds and specific areas for geriatric and psychiatric care, with works commencing this June (790,000 euros). Additionally, a new advanced therapies building will be tendered (29 million euros), housing proton therapy services and a cyclotron unit for Nuclear Medicine.
The modernization of the Doctor Negrín also includes new hybrid operating rooms, the restructuring of the day surgery area, a fourth hemodynamics room, and the recent launch of the oncological day hospital. In terms of technology, the hospital will incorporate state-of-the-art equipment, including a 3 Tesla MRI scanner (over two million euros), ophthalmic surgical microscopes, and thirty new ultrasound machines.
Responding to a long-standing demand, a new modular parking building will be constructed next to the Outpatient Consultations area, adding approximately 300 additional spaces, and the current parking facilities will be renovated, with a total investment exceeding 3.5 million euros.
