Club Baloncesto Gran Canaria faces a complex situation after its relegation to Primera FEB, ending 31 consecutive seasons in Liga Endesa. The historic club must now rebuild to regain its place in national basketball.
Following the resignation of president Sitapha Savané and the departures of several players and sporting director Willy Villar, attention is now focused on the athletes who still have active contracts for the upcoming 2026-2027 season in the second division. These include Ziga Samar, Carlos Alocén, Miquel Salvó, Nicolás Brussino, Pierre Pelos, and Kur Kuath.
The claret institution is in a strong economic and sporting position, able to cover the salaries of these players in Primera FEB. Although almost all have attracted interest from Liga ACB teams and foreign clubs, the club is working to retain them, acknowledging that several players have received proposals for their departure.
Significant renewals have already been secured during the season. French power forward Pierre Pelos and Argentine small forward Nicolás Brussino reached agreements until 2028 and 2027 respectively, with no release clauses for relegation. Similarly, Catalan small forward Miquel Salvó and point guard Carlos Alocén also extended their contracts until 2028, and both have expressed their desire to continue with the project.
The cases of Ziga Samar and center Kur Kuath, both under contract until 2027, are pending resolution. Samar will need to pay a sum to be released from his agreement, while Kuath has a cut-off clause. Kuath's familiarity with Primera FEB is being valued.
The official appointment of Francesc Solana as the new sporting director and Bruno Savignani as the head coach is expected in early July. Both will aim to convince players considered key to the club's future.
Furthermore, the club has expressed interest in Icelandic point guard Jón Alex Gudmundsson, whose contract with Recoletas Salud San Pablo Burgos has ended. Gudmundsson previously played under Savignani during a promotion season to Liga Endesa.
