The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, met on Monday in Ingenio, Gran Canaria, with the Lacemakers Association to promote the protection of this textile craft.

The archipelago's president, Fernando Clavijo, held an institutional meeting in Ingenio, Gran Canaria, with the Association of Lacemakers of the Villa de Ingenio (ACVI). The main objective of the meeting was to address the protection and promotion of traditional Canarian lacework, a key textile craft for the cultural identity of the islands.
The meeting, held at the end of May 2026, was also attended by the Vice-Minister of the Presidency, Alfonso Cabello. The appointment served to analyze the current situation of the artisanal sector in Gran Canaria and explore avenues for public collaboration. The president of ACVI, Isabel Hernández, conveyed to the authorities the urgent needs of the collective to ensure the generational succession of this centuries-old craft.
This meeting is part of the regional executive's outreach rounds with cultural and traditional sectors. The aim is to highlight the work of the lacemakers, which has positioned Ingenio as a historical benchmark for this textile technique in the Atlantic. The ACVI board presented revitalization plans and requested greater funding and training spaces to prevent the technique from disappearing due to industrial textile production.
