The oldest athletics club in the Canary Islands, founded in 1962 and set to celebrate its 65th anniversary in 2027, has been honored for its work in sports promotion and its strong commitment to grassroots development. The Department of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Poli Suárez, grants this award to an entity that has introduced athletics to hundreds of young people and represented the Canary Islands in numerous national competitions.
Under the presidency of Oliver Armas, CAI Gran Canaria is recognized for its athletics school, where children and young people can start in the discipline. This focus on training has led to recent successes, including winning the Canary Islands Club League in 2024 and both the male and female titles in the Canary Islands U14 Team Championship in September 2025. Over sixty percent of the participants in the Canary Islands league were trained in the club's own school.
The club's history, dating back to 1962, has been crucial to the history of Canary Islands sports, helping to maintain interest in athletics among new generations. The club will receive the award on November 13th, during the third edition of the Canary Islands Sports Awards, to be held at the Pérez Galdós Theater in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
