The Parliament of the Canary Islands held the 'Deputies for a Day' event, where 58 schoolchildren from Gran Canaria and Tenerife presented proposals on coexistence and screen usage.

The Parliament of the Canary Islands celebrated a new edition of the children's plenary session 'Deputies for a Day', an initiative by Aldeas Infantiles SOS Spain. This time, 58 primary school students from Huertas del Palmar school (Teror) and Leoncio Estévez Luis school (La Orotava) took on the role of deputies to present their proposals.
The session was presided over by the President of the Parliament, Astrid Pérez, and the President of Aldeas Infantiles SOS Spain, Pedro Puig. The children focused their initiatives on coexistence and the responsible use of screens and new technologies, the central theme of the educational program 'Embrace Your Values'.

"Initiatives like 'Deputies for a Day' not only bring institutions closer to our children but also help to strengthen and consolidate the democratic values upon which our rule of law is based."

Astrid Pérez · President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands
Astrid Pérez thanked Aldeas Infantiles for their work and emphasized the importance of bringing democratic institutions closer to younger generations. She highlighted the need to reinforce coexistence in the digital environment, reminding attendees that 'behind every message, every comment, and every image, there is a person'.

"Sometimes, when we use a screen, we forget that our words can hurt or they can help."

Astrid Pérez · President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands
Among the proposals highlighted by the schoolchildren was the initiative 'A Week with Less Screens', which aims to temporarily reduce the use of digital devices to encourage other forms of interaction. The president valued the participants' involvement, concluding that democracy 'needs ideas, reflection, and commitment to remain alive and strong'.

"Today, the Parliament belongs to you."

Astrid Pérez · President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands
The plenary session was moderated by the Deputy General Director and the Head of Press of Aldeas Infantiles SOS Spain, María del Mar Líndez and María Gracia Escudero, respectively.
