Four students from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) will travel to Madrid on October 29 and 30 to compete in the national phase of the “University Digital Leaders” contest, organized by the Network of Telefónica Chairs.

The students were selected after the local phase held at the School of Telecommunication and Electronic Engineering on October 2nd. Their projects cover various areas of technology and urban innovation.
The participants are: Alejandro Delgado Valera (Degree in Data Science and Engineering) with the project “Economic Impact Monitor of Events in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria”; Alba Ramos Quintana (Degree in Computer Engineering) with “Impulso LPA”, to monitor pedestrian flow in commercial areas; Reinaldo Hernández Sánchez (Degree in Telecommunication Technologies Engineering) with “ReparaPlan LPA”, an urban incident management system; and Aythami Lorenzo Padilla (Degree in Data Science and Engineering) with “Triana Accesible”, an accessible route generator.
The jury evaluated the technical innovation, quality of the proof of concept, and sustainability of the proposals, developed under this edition's theme: Will a Smart City without AI remain competitive in the coming years?
In the national phase, students will face problem-solving challenges using digital competencies (hard skills), showcase communication and leadership abilities (soft skills), and complete a test linked to the business environment and decision-making.
The “University Digital Leaders 2026” initiative, by the Network of Telefónica Chairs, aims to test the technological knowledge, leadership, and communication skills of undergraduate and master's students against the challenges of the digital society. Attending the recognition ceremony were David Sánchez, Vice-Rector for Students and Chair Director, and Juan Flores, Director of Telefónica Spain in the Canary Islands.
