This initiative aims to accelerate the implementation of floating wind turbines in the island's southeast, arguing that Gran Canaria is prepared for this energy advancement without depending on the timelines of other Spanish regions.
The president of the Cabildo, Antonio Morales, and the president of the Canary Islands Maritime Cluster, Germán Suárez, led the signing of the letter addressed to Sara Aagesen, Secretary of State for Energy, demanding a clear timeline for the deployment of this technology.
“"Our ecosystem needs a framework to act. The accumulated delay in the wind power auction is becoming difficult to justify."
Suárez highlighted the economic and employment potential of this green energy, estimating that 500 megawatts (MW) could generate between 4,700 and 12,000 million euros and create between 2,400 and 8,000 jobs.
The stable generation capacity of offshore wind, combined with the energy storage capacity of Salto de Chira, would reduce electricity production costs in the island's isolated system, according to the president of the Maritime Cluster.
The Cabildo's Energy Councilor, Raúl García, suggested that the delay in the national auction call might be linked to social opposition in other regions like Catalonia and Galicia. However, Morales emphasized that there is “no opposition” in Gran Canaria and the island is ready to move forward.
“"We want offshore wind in Gran Canaria now."
