The youth wrestling scene in Gran Canaria has once again demonstrated its significant potential by securing two regional championships in Tenerife. The island's male and female youth teams were crowned champions in the Noelia Cabrera and José Rodríguez “Faro de Maspalomas” tournaments, respectively, highlighting the excellent state of grassroots sports on the island.
The competition took place at the Santiago Yánez Arena in Punta Brava, Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife). The Gran Canaria women's team emerged victorious in the Noelia Cabrera Tournament, decisively defeating Fuerteventura in the final with a score of 22-9. Throughout the championship, the Gran Canaria team exhibited remarkable consistency and competitive spirit, having previously overcome La Palma (10-24), Fuerteventura (24-8), and Lanzarote in the semi-finals (33-3).
Meanwhile, the Gran Canaria men's team claimed the José Rodríguez “Faro de Maspalomas” Tournament title after an intense final against Fuerteventura, which was decided by a narrow margin (12-13). The men's team faced a more challenging path, losing in the group stage to Fuerteventura (21-14) but rallying with a crucial victory against La Palma (22-8) to advance to the semi-finals. There, they defeated Tenerife (10-22), ultimately achieving sporting revenge in the final.
These two championships represent a significant boost for youth Canarian Wrestling in Gran Canaria, acknowledging the dedicated work carried out by the island's clubs. The Gran Canaria Island Wrestling Federation congratulated all involved for this success, which reinforces the prominent role of Gran Canaria's young athletes in traditional Canarian sports.
