The electricity demand coverage in Gran Canaria by photovoltaic energy set a new historical record on May 24th. At 12:59 PM, solar generation reached 43.58% of the island's real consumption, according to data from Red Eléctrica de España (REE).
At that moment, the photovoltaic solar generation fed into the island's electrical system was 177.81 megawatts (MW), while the island's total demand reached 408.02 MW. It is important to note that this figure does not include self-consumption generation from companies and individuals.
This new peak occurred during a month, May, which has been extraordinary for photovoltaic generation across the archipelago. For the islands as a whole, photovoltaic generation grew by 29.6%, reaching 58,008 MWh, which accounted for 7.6% of the total.
These figures represent the highest contributions ever recorded for solar energy in the islands.
