The renovation and expansion project for the Gran Canaria Stadium, located in Siete Palmas, includes the installation of a fog-catching system on the stadium's roof. The collected water will be used for irrigating the pitch and green areas, as well as supporting the greywater system, aiming to decrease reliance on potable water.
This system, named La Nube (The Cloud), is designed to capture, channel, and reuse water from ambient humidity, such as fog or mist, as well as from nocturnal condensation (dew) and moisture generated by spectators' respiration and perspiration during events. The strategy seeks to establish a closed water cycle for non-potable uses.
The proposal, part of the tender documents issued by the Instituto Insular de Deportes (Island Institute of Sports), involves integrating mesh collector modules into the roof's supporting structure, prioritizing elevated and ventilated areas. The captured water will be channeled, undergo basic pre-treatment (solid retention, settling), and stored in tanks for use.
Initial project hypotheses estimate a daily collection capacity of between 5,000 and 8,000 liters of water through the roof's meshes, which will cover an area of 40,000 square meters. This figure will vary depending on the thermal differential.
Additionally, an estimated 12,000 liters per night are expected from nocturnal condensation (dew). Moisture generated by the attendance of crowds at matches and events will also contribute significantly: between 15,300 and 16,000 liters are calculated for a three-hour event, rising to 23,560 liters for an eight-hour event.
