The Emergency Department of the Hospital Universitario Insular de Gran Canaria, part of the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular-Materno Infantil and affiliated with the Canary Islands Government's Health Department, has broadened its "More Inclusive Emergency" project. This pioneering initiative aims to enhance the quality of urgent healthcare by adapting key aspects such as access, communication, and support for various groups.
The program, launched late last year, focuses on situations requiring specialized communication and care responses. Staff training involves practical simulations, discussions, and active learning, equipping healthcare professionals with tools to effectively interact with diverse patient profiles.
One focus area is dedicated to individuals with autism, in partnership with the ADEPSI Association. This training provides Emergency staff with knowledge and strategies to mitigate stress factors that may arise when attending to these patients.
Additionally, the Funcasor Association collaborates in assisting deaf individuals, introducing professionals to fundamental aspects of the deaf community and essential elements of sign language. Emphasis is placed on using facial expressions and communication skills to facilitate interaction.
The recent addition of the Sororidad Mujeres Víctimas de Violencia Association expands the program's scope to include specific care for women who have experienced violence. The project anticipates incorporating new training modules in the future.
The hospital intends to extend this experience to other Emergency services within the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular-Materno Infantil. This initiative aligns with the person-centered healthcare strategy of the Canary Islands Health Service.
