The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has intensified its security measures for the visit of Pope Leo XIV. The Municipal Emergency Plan, known as PEMULPA, has been on alert since 08:00 this Monday. The aim is to ensure coordination among emergency, mobility, and citizen assistance services during the planned events, which are expected to draw thousands of people to various locations across the capital of Gran Canaria.
The Pontiff's visit will unfold in several key venues, including Plaza de Santa Ana, Estadio de Gran Canaria, Gran Canaria Arena, and the Siete Palmas area. Security presence will also be reinforced at Plaza Stagno, along the popemobile route, and at the entrances to the Cathedral of Santa Ana. The operation involves the Local Police, Mobility Agents, Firefighters, Civil Protection, Security and Emergencies, along with other essential municipal services. The City Council had previously placed PEMULPA on a pre-alert status on April 4th, now raising the level due to the proximity of the main events.
Authorities advise citizens to plan their travel and prioritize public transport, avoiding private vehicles in affected areas, particularly in Vegueta, Triana, and Siete Palmas. In the Siete Palmas area, parking lots near the Estadio de Gran Canaria, Siete Palmas Shopping Center, Hipercor, and Infecar will be reserved for authorized vehicles and registered mass attendees, requiring a minimum occupancy of four people per car.
Traffic closures, diversions, and parking restrictions are anticipated in various parts of the city to facilitate the events and ensure safety. Safety recommendations for June 11th include avoiding crowded areas, not carrying objects that hinder mobility, not causing pushes, and not stopping in designated passage zones. In case of emergency, individuals are urged to contact 112. For minors, it is advised to attend accompanied and properly identified, establishing meeting points. Given the weather forecast, sun protection and hydration are recommended.
