The resolution from the General Directorate of Building and Activities responds to a request from the Gran Canaria Island Sports Institute, confirming that the project does not require a strategic environmental assessment or an environmental impact assessment. This approval allows for the tender process for the works and the granting of the necessary license to proceed.
The project, dubbed 'La Nube' (The Cloud), involves a significant increase in the stadium's capacity, from 32,418 to 41,854 spectators. The built area will also expand, both above ground (from 46,182.66 to 75,215.5 square meters) and below ground (from 17,067.89 to 28,683.83 square meters).
Among the details revealed by the municipal analysis is a bicycle wheel-like roof design, featuring two concentric rings connected by prestressed spokes, which will improve solar control, reduce glare, and optimize acoustics. The stadium's enveloping facade will incorporate a pattern of traditional Canarian pintaderas, integrated into the panel's screen printing.
Regarding parking, the renovation will add 73 new spaces, bringing the total to 597, with the possibility of a future expansion adding another 26 spaces, reaching 623 parking spots. Sanitary facilities will also be modernized, with 690 urinals, 234 toilets, and 265 sinks for men; and 456 toilets and 252 sinks for women.
The proposal includes the demolition of stands and core structures, especially in the north area, as well as the dismantling of roofs, canopies, and other dilapidated structures. Obsolete technical installations will be removed, and the exterior urbanization of the venue will be improved. Accesses to the stadium will be differentiated for general public, VIP users, authorities, athletes, technical staff, press, volunteers, and emergency services, each with specific entrances.
The surroundings of the Gran Canaria Stadium will also be redesigned to create a large public space platform, intended for the transit and mass reception of users during high-attendance events, with new squares, green areas, and pedestrian boulevards. Accesses to 'La Nube' will be expanded, including one in the northwest, two in the northeast from Fondos de Segura, another around the curve, and two more in the west.
