The capital of Gran Canaria was filled with excitement for the Insular Judo Championship – Gran Canaria Games Benjamin and Alevín. More than 240 young judokas from various island clubs showcased their talent and values in an intense double day. The competition, held at the Gran Canaria Sports City, was marked by camaraderie and emotion.
From early morning, Benjamin category bouts were followed by Alevín competitions, a format that allowed for full enjoyment of each match. The tatamis hosted judokas from clubs including Judo Club Tama, Bushikan, Akari–Las Nieves, Sakura, Areté, Aytahmi Ruano, Villasclaras, Batán, Akita, Polikata Guruma, Metropole, and Tanaka, demonstrating the significant training efforts across the island.
The event highlighted the promising future of Gran Canarian judo, with young athletes displaying not only technical skill and bravery but also profound respect for the sport. The stands, packed with family and fans, buzzed with enthusiasm, celebrating the progress of the young judokas in a true grassroots sports festival.
This championship, organized by the Gran Canaria Judo Federation, presided over by Domingo Afonso, showcased the federation's excellent organizational capacity and commitment to the growth of island judo. All participants were recognized, not just the medalists, reflecting the philosophy of valuing effort and enthusiasm.
The day, featuring nine weight categories, coincided with the celebration of Canary Islands Day, a symbolic moment to champion local talent and celebrate the youth, clubs, coaches, and families who support the future of judo in Gran Canaria.
