A total of 24 male and 18 female shepherds have been selected to manage 54 of the 59 lots tendered by Gesplan, aimed at reducing forest fuel in strategic areas of the island. The remaining five lots received no bids. This award, corresponding to the 2026 tender, represents the highest number of professionals involved in the five years of this environmental service's implementation.
The initiative, promoted by the Cabildo's Department of Environment, seeks to provide stability to the livestock families participating in the Gran Canaria Mosaico program, extending the contract duration to three years (2026, 2027, and 2028). This measure acknowledges their fundamental role in land management and fire prevention.
The economic compensation for grazing work in high-risk forest fire areas is adjusted based on various factors, such as the grazed area, vegetation type, and the strategic value of the zone. The payment system distinguishes between different grazing situations: from pasture areas to ravine beds with reeds, where the intervention of goats and sheep is especially useful for vegetation management.
The grazing calendar is divided into two periods, one until June 30 and another until October 1. Farms that complete their grazing work before June 30 will receive a bonus, as their intervention occurs before the period of highest risk for large forest fires.
