SPAR Gran Canaria and Coagrisan have renewed their annual agreement, ensuring the commercialization of 500 tons of tomatoes from La Aldea de San Nicolás across more than 200 sales points, benefiting 650 families and 69 jobs on the island.

For the sixth consecutive year, SPAR Gran Canaria and Coagrisan, a Canarian Cooperative Society, have formalized a crucial agreement for the island's primary sector. This convention will allow SPAR Gran Canaria to distribute 500 tons of tomatoes grown in La Aldea de San Nicolás through its more than 200 establishments, thereby promoting quality production and the sustainability of local cultivation.
The initiative not only guarantees the presence of varieties such as Solange, Aldiana, and Cabosur on shelves until June 2026, but also represents a fundamental pillar for the local economy. The purchase of this indigenous product directly contributes to maintaining 69 jobs and supporting over 650 families linked to Coagrisan, solidifying tomatoes as the main employment-generating activity in La Aldea.

"The renewal of this agreement responds to an undeniable reality: the primary sector in the Canary Islands faces significant structural challenges, from production costs to external competition. This agreement is not just a commercial alliance, but a tool for stability for tomato producers in La Aldea."

Ángel Medina · President of SPAR Gran Canaria
The agreement assures Coagrisan the exclusive distribution of its products at a fair price, covering production costs and fostering the promotion of the quality of Canarian tomatoes. Among the commitments undertaken are the promotion of sustainable practices, the improvement of working conditions for farmers, and the development of strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of Canarian tomatoes in the market.
The agreement has the institutional backing of the Government of Canarias, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, the City Council of La Aldea de San Nicolás, and the Coordinator of Farmers' and Ranchers' Organizations of Canarias (COAG). This joint support underscores the strategic importance of La Aldea tomatoes for the region's identity and economy.

"It is a source of pride that, thanks to this agreement, Canarian families and visitors can enjoy a top-quality tomato, grown in our land, recognized for its qualities throughout Europe and an undisputed symbol of La Aldea's identity."

Pedro Suárez · Mayor of La Aldea de San Nicolás
The signing of the agreement took place at the Mercalaspalmas facilities, with the attendance of prominent figures such as Antonio Morales, president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria; Pedro Suárez, mayor of La Aldea de San Nicolás; Juan Ramón Rodríguez, general director of Agriculture for the Government of Canarias; and Miguel Hidalgo, island councilor for the Primary Sector. Representing SPAR Gran Canaria were its president, Ángel Medina, and vice-president, José López, along with Rogelio Rodríguez, vice-president of Coagrisan, and María del Carmen Pérez, president of COAG Canarias.
